Thermopile IR detectors
The thermoelectric IR detectors of the MTS series (Micro-Hybrid Thermopile Sensors) are characterized by particularly high detectivity and durability.
They are suitable for non-contact temperature measurement as well as for NDIR gas analysis. IR thermopiles, also known as thermopiles, detect broadband IR radiation. The basis of each detector is a so-called thermocouple. An electrical voltage is generated by thermal diffusion currents between two different metals (Seebeck effect). This is passed on and processed as a measurement signal. The sensitivity of the detector significantly influences the quality of the measurement result.

Applications Thermal IR detectors
Contactless temperature measurement
Optical temperature measurement enables use in demanding areas. It plays a decisive role in process stability and product quality.
Applications
Temperature monitoring of rotating or moving objects: In production lines, e.g. in the manufacture of paper, glass or tires, IR thermal sensors measure the temperature of objects during movement. This contactless measurement is important to avoid wear or process interruptions.</p
Plastic processing - injection molding: Thermoelectric IR detectors monitor the temperature of mold surfaces and molded plastic parts to ensure uniform cooling and high-quality results. This prevents deformation or material defects.
Metal industry - monitoring metal temperature in the rolling mill: IR temperature sensors detect the temperature of metal strips or sheets during rolling in real time. This continuous measurement allows the rolling parameters to be adjusted for consistent material quality and energy efficiency.
Challenges
Harsh environmental conditions:
In the metal industry, especially in rolling mills, the sensors are exposed to extreme temperatures, dust and mechanical stress. This requires robust housings to protect the chip membrane.
Humidity in the measuring environment: In humid environments, water vapor can absorb infrared radiation and impair measurement accuracy. A filter in the transmission range of 8 to 14 µm reduces this interference and thus enables precise temperature measurement.
Compensation of ambient temperature fluctuations:
Fluctuating ambient temperatures can affect the accuracy of non-contact temperature measurement. Precise determination of the ambient temperature is required for accurate measurement results.</p
Our MTS thermopile sensors offer reliable solutions to these challenges to ensure the performance and longevity of IR detectors in demanding industrial processes.
NDIR gas analysis
Gas sensor applications are diverse, demanding precise thermoelectric IR detectors for challenging environments.
Applications
Emission monitoring: Thermoelectric IR detectors are used to measure greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄) or sulphur dioxide (SO₂) in exhaust gases. This precise analysis is crucial in order to comply with legal emission requirements and minimize the ecological footprint of industrial plants.</p
Indoor air quality: Thermoelectric IR detectors analyze carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels in offices, production facilities or aircraft cabin air, among other things. This ensures that healthy indoor air is maintained.</p
Leakage detection in gas plants: Thermoelectric IR detectors are used in industrial gas plants to detect potential leaks of methane (CH₄) or other greenhouse gases at an early stage. This precise detection increases safety and reduces environmental risks.
Challenges
Interference from other gases: Gases or particles in the measurement environment can interfere with the absorption signals and reduce the measurement accuracy. Precise filtering and calibration techniques are required to reliably identify specific gases.</p
Sensitivity to temperature fluctuations: Accuracy can be affected by temperature fluctuations in the measurement environment. Reliable temperature compensation is necessary to ensure correct results under changing environmental conditions.</p
Reaction time: In many areas, fast detection of gases is crucial to minimize risks to safety and the environment. This places high demands on the signal processing speed and sensitivity of the detectors.
Our MTS thermopile sensors offer reliable solutions for the realization of reliable and durable measuring systems for NDIR gas analysis.
Design and variants of the MTS thermopile detectors
Our highly sensitive MTS thermopile detectors are available in TO46 or TO39 housings as single, dual or quad channel detectors.
We offer single-channel detectors with different technical properties for IR temperature measurement. In addition, our portfolio includes a variety of two- or four-channel detectors for NDIR gas analysis.
We customize our IR sensors with different optical filters according to your requirements. This gives you a customized product solution for thermometry, non-contact temperature measurement or gas monitoring.
High Temperature Thermopile
Temperature monitoring of machines and processes at high ambient temperatures is a real challenge. Our high-temperature thermopile MTS1HIGHTEMP80 was designed for use at high temperatures up to 180 °C and is particularly suitable for industrial applications with special requirements. An integrated thermistor for internal temperature monitoring enables compensation for external temperature influences.
IR spectrometry with the TPL 64 thermopile line array
The 64-pixel thermopile arrangement detects infrared radiation and converts it into an analog voltage signal. The high sensitivity and specific detectivity of each pixel represents a significant advantage compared to similar products on the market. The excellent spectral range of sensitivity from 2-16 µm opens up various application possibilities in spectrometry, for example for analyzing gases and liquids.
