Pyroelectric IR detectors

MPS pyroelectric sensors in the standard TO housing are suitable for industrial and medical applications of NDIR gas sensors.

Micro-Hybrid offers 2- and 4-channel detectors in a standard TO39 housing. The variants have optical filters with targeted absorption in the wavelength range of various sample gases. They are suitable for measuring hydrocarbons (CxHy), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2), among others. Our pyroelectric thin-film sensor is the basis for outstanding performance features such as high detectivity and modulation frequencies.

Gas analysis in medicine and medical technology

Pyroelectric detectors are used in gas analysis in medicine and medical technology due to their sensitivity and precision in various applications.

Applications

Breathing gas analysis: Pyroelectric detectors measure the concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other gases in exhaled air. This is essential for monitoring respiratory function and diagnosing respiratory diseases.

Anesthetic gas monitoring: Pyroelectric detectors are used to analyze anesthetic gas mixtures during surgical procedures. They ensure precise control of the concentrations of gases such as nitrous oxide (N₂O) and isoflurane to enable safe anaesthesia.

Capnography in emergency and intensive care medicine: Pyroelectric detectors are used in capnographs to continuously measure the CO₂ content in exhaled air. This application is crucial for monitoring ventilation and the early detection of complications.

Challenges

Here are three challenges that can arise in the applications of pyroelectric detectors in medicine:

Cross-sensitivities: In respiratory gas analysis, other gases or moisture can influence the measurement, leading to erroneous results. This requires special filters or algorithms for signal processing.

Device miniaturization: Modern medical technology requires compact devices that are nevertheless highly precise and reliable. This places high demands on the integration of the detectors.

Temperature stability: Pyroelectric detectors are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, which can lead to measurement deviations. Precise temperature compensation or stabilization is therefore necessary, especially in mobile or changing operating environments.

Our pyroelectric detectors offer reliable solutions to these challenges in sensor development and system integration.

Industrial gas analysis

The high sensitivity and reliability of pyroelectric detectors make them an optimal choice for precise and demanding industrial applications.

Applications

Emission monitoring: Pyroelectric detectors are used to measure greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄) and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ). These measurements are essential to comply with legal requirements and to control emissions from industrial plants.

Process monitoring: In chemical production processes, pyroelectric IR detectors are used to analyze the composition of process gases such as carbon monoxide (CO) or sulfur dioxide (SO₂). This is used for quality control and to optimize reaction conditions.

Leakage detection: Pyroelectric sensors enable the fast and precise detection of gas leaks, e.g. in methane, pipelines or gas processing plants. This application contributes to safety and the prevention of energy losses.

Challenges

Aggressive gas environments: Some process or exhaust gases contain corrosive substances that can damage the optics and electronics of the detector. The use of special protective coatings or housings is necessary to ensure the service life of the sensors.

Detection of low concentrations: In applications such as emission monitoring, extremely low gas concentrations must be measured reliably. This places high demands on the sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio of the detectors.

Temperature and pressure conditions: In industrial processes, extreme temperatures and pressure fluctuations often occur, which affect the performance of pyroelectric detectors. This requires robust designs and advanced temperature and pressure compensations.

Our MPS detectors offer reliable solutions for overcoming these challenges to provide reliable and durable measurement systems for industrial gas analysis.
